What are the difference between ice age animals and prehistoric animals.

Oct. 31, 2025

The main difference between Ice Age animals and prehistoric animals is the different geological eras and ecological environments in which they live. ‌ Ice Age animals refers specifically to animals during the Quaternary glacial period, while prehistoric animals cover a wider time range, including the prehistoric period before the Ice Age.

Here are some ice age animals reprsentative:Sabretooth,Megatheriumon,Glyptodon ,Archaeopteryx .

In essence, while all Ice Age animals are prehistoric, not all prehistoric animals are Ice Age animals. The Ice Age is just one specific period within the larger context of prehistoric life.

Some people tend to associate prehistoric animals with similar species today, such as some people speculate that mammoths are the ancestors of elephants, and saber-toothed tigers are the ancestors of tigers. However, species evolution is not taken for granted, but must be based on scientific evidence, mainly in three aspects: one is fossil records and anatomy, the second is biogeography, and the third is molecular genetics. Existing evidence shows that mammoths and modern elephants, saber-toothed tigers and tigers are not ancestor and descendant, but parallel evolution.
